While I originally set out to make a dance film using only the material that I devised with one performer, I started to be involved in other student’s projects as their lighting designer and I became interested in the overlap between all of the individually conceived and created projects, especially where it seemed that the only overlap that existed was me as lighting designer and creative voice in the room.
What followed then is a compilation of all of the material that I worked on for all five individual projects. I experimented with how to combine these videos which all felt very different, and ultimately ended up using the performers' similar movement phrases back to back, a music-based structure for the editing, and three distinct “acts” of the video to weave all of the different material together.
While it is hard to fully encapsulate the breadth of my coursework with a few selected projects, these images show the variety of my exploration and research. Learning to respond as a holistic designer and to think in three dimensional space while rendering or dreaming up a design has been an invaluable skill that I have worked on this year.
